Town clinch win but team display was below recent standards

York British Sugar Association Football Minor League

Pocklington Town 4-2 Riccall Raiders

04/12/05

Town started brightest in this top of the league clash, home advantage playing a leading role in this tight encounter.

Towns good start led to an attacking move down the right with a cross swung in towards Forweather who, after having a wild air shot, scrambled it in.

Controversially the goal was allowed as it had seemed the ball did not fully cross the line.

Riccall immediately hit back with a penalty given away for a clumsy tackle by Saltmer at the other end. Town then again went ahead through Nicholls with a neat lob over the keeper. Riccall dominated for the remaining period of the first half.

Fresh from the break town came out and added early on to their lead to make it 3-1 through a good finish by Gilpin. The rest of the half belonged to Riccall who pressed on making some great chances and enjoyed plenty of possession.

The hard work of the paid off late on when a good move was rounded off with a smart finish to make it 3-2. Although Pock sustained heavy pressure they kept battling and it was rewarded with another goal for Nicholls to end the match and the score stayed at 4-2 at the final whistle.

This match may prove vital in the title race as town are now clear leaders of division two and looking favourites for the league. Although their were positives taken from the game there were negatives also for Pock.

There were two bookings for either side, in the Pock colours there was one for Saltmer and one for Robertson. This is something the manager will have to work hard on as it the manager has been reported saying ‘Listen to the ref and don’t argue’. These rules breached clearly.

Also if they want to maintain their unbeaten streak they will have to work hard in training on their defensive tactics as Riccall split the Town defence in half on a few occasions. The only real usual town performances from Gilpin and a man of the match performance from Nicholls.

Some performances were weak and need to up their game if they are to maintain a place in the side. Gray, after recent solid performances, didn’t work hard enough and it was a lacklustre performance compared to his recent games. He was late substituted for Smith.

Saltmer the team captain such an instrumental player in the team had an average performance for his high standards. Forweather in the middle was slow and second to the ball every time and need to work on his fitness levels.
