Graphic: Have Your Say

Do you live in the Watton or Wayland area? Is there a story you feel should be covered? How do you feel about the BBC Voices project?

Have Your Say now with BBCi where you live.

In 1202 King John granted a Market Charter but this was challenged as being prejudicial to one in the adjoining parish of Saham Toney, then a Royal Manor and of greater importance than Watton.

The differences between the parishes is said to have caused an outbreak of violence in 1375 and grudges are said to have continued for hundreds of years.

The Watton Clock Tower was built in 1679 by Christopher Hey who delt in fabrics and cloth. The tower is said to have been built to house a fire warning bell after the great fire of Watton in the 1670's.

When a new clock was installed, the brick tower was rendered in cement in 1827. The tower is said to have had many uses over the years - including a local prison and a rubbish store.

Part of Watton's insignia consists of a Hare and a Tun. The hare (wat) and the barrel (tun) motif can now be seen on the Clock Tower.
