The book Goal! is based on the film of the same name, about a young lad from from a poor Mexican family living in Los Angeles who dreams of playing Premiership football. Through sheer determination he ends up playing for Newcastle United and although the other players don't like him at first, they soon become friends. He even gets to be mates with the big stars. Robert Rigby, who has lived in Norfolk for 20 years, wrote the book Goal! based on the script for the film. "My publisher asked me if I liked football and what team I supported. She then asked me if I fancied writing the book," he said. "Being a football fan I said 'yes'. But she then told me that I had five months in which to write it!" he added. Robert spent five years as a writer for Byker Grove so knows Newcastle well but he was able to have a tour of St James' Park including the changing rooms and the tunnel leading on to the pitch. "I wanted to know what it felt like walking down the tunnel and out on to the pitch. I even found out that there are 15 individual baths in the changing rooms!" he said. The book Goal! is the fastest selling teenage book in hardback and will be followed by two more to complete the trilogy. Have you read Goal!? Email your review to us at norfolk@bbc.co.uk |
