Blast media village in Norwich
The Blast media village comes to Norwich

Creativity unleashed as Blast pitches up in Norwich

The UK's only mobile learning studio of its kind has been in Norwich to give young people the chance to use cutting-edge technology and showcase their creative side. More than 300 people visited the BBC Blast truck on 26 and 27 July, 2006.

A unique media village for 13 to 19-year-olds unfolded outside the BBC's eastern headquarters at The Forum in Norwich.

The BBC Blast truck is the only mobile learning centre of its type in the UK and its visit to Norwich was part of its first year on tour.

The studio, which is housed in a 45-ft lorry, took five months to fit out with the latest technology and takes eight people 12 hours to set up in each location.

In Norwich, the centre saw more than 300 teenagers during two days.

Staff from across the BBC as well as special guests and local groups including The Garage and Community Music East got involved with the Blast truck, running around 20 workshops across the two days.

The studio's facilities were used to record a radio drama with The Archers' actor Terry Molloy - who also played Davros in Doctor Who.

Young people also got hands-on experience in web design and flash animation, virtual car 'pimping' and recording music.

1Xtra DJ J Swift, from Earlham in Norwich, also tapped into BBC Blast's expertise to record his first music video with his crew Spoken Drama.

The event also included breakdancing, poetry sessions and blogging masterclasses, plus a unique workshop held in the St Peter Mancroft church into the influence medieval music has on today's pop.

The BBC Blast truck is touring 15 locations across the country and was launched to encourage and showcase young people's creative work.

I was in Norwich for the day, with some Belgian students studying English to visit "The Forum" and see the city of Norwich. My group and I danced infront of the green screen- it was great! My clip was actually in the video :) it was really cool, even though it was just a few seconds . We had originally asked to do our dance on the performance stage, but there were so many great workshops going on that it wasn't possible, but we were able to dance in front of the green screen instead! -Thanks to all the BBC who were there!

My son Nick attended your blast event - he was in point blanq. After 2 days and recording their songs, their performance was very good outside the forum, this then springboarded a gig last night in attleborough white lodge inn. it was simply breath taking, and the feeing this was down to the 2 days they had with Blast. It seemed to boost the confidence of all of them, and they wowed the audience. Not sure why they are not on your web site though, but a well done from me.

I really liked it! I hope they do this oppotunity next year for my brother. He would love it as well. There should of been more things happening like music or some little show but the rest was the best!

I think it was very good and the dance class was brilliant it is good that you got taught a whole dance in about 1 and a half hours. I also liked the drama because it makes you not feel shy and you can really bring yourself out. I would like to say thankyou to all the blast crew.
