Wedding venues

Since the law was changed four years ago, couples can choose to tie the knot in a wide range of approved venues across Northern Ireland.

Belfast Castle tops the popularity poll here but some couples are opting for the more unusual places such Mussenden temple on the north coast, Lusty Beg island, and even the stage at the Grand Opera House.

Top ten wedding venues (excluding churches and registry offices)

  1. Belfast Castle, Belfast
  2. The Old Inn, Crawfordsburn
  3. Galgorm Manor Hotel, Ballymena
  4. Malone House, Belfast
  5. Clandeboye Lodge Hotel, Bangor
  6. Carrickfergus Castle,
  7. Portadown Town Hall
  8. Culloden Hotel, Holywood
  9. La Mon House Hotel, Castlereagh
  10. Narrow Water Castle, Warrenpoint

It is possible to get married in a hospital, and even a prison, adding new meaning to the term ball and chain!

Cross border weddings

Until recently, heading across the border was another popular choice, when the euro exchange rate made it worth while.

But now some couples are canceling their receptions in Donegal and re-booking in Northern Ireland.

Shauna Green O'Doherty and Michael O'Doherty

They include newly-weds Shauna Green O'Doherty and her husband Michael O'Doherty, who decided they would get better value for money north of the border.

However, Donegal hoteliers are not taking this lying down as our North west reporter Keiron Tourish found out.
