Probation officers play a crucial part in the criminal justice system. As well as writing pre-sentence reports, they supervise more than 3,000 offenders in the community, and run programmes which aim to help criminals to change their behaviour. So what does it take to do such a challenging job, and how is the Probation Board performing? Chris Page has been speaking to the Director of Probation, Brian McCaughey.
