The Probation Board

When offenders are released back into the community, the Probation Board for Northern Ireland is the body tasked with managing the risk they pose to the public.

Probation officers play a crucial part in the criminal justice system.

As well as writing pre-sentence reports, they supervise more than 3,000 offenders in the community, and run programmes which aim to help criminals to change their behaviour.

So what does it take to do such a challenging job, and how is the Probation Board performing?

Chris Page has been speaking to the Director of Probation, Brian McCaughey.

Chris also asks Mr McCaughey what motivates probation officers, and asks him to answer critics who say the system is too soft on criminals.
