Brigadier George Norton

The Northern Ireland Garrison Commander's address to the assembled press in response to the Massereene shooting

Two young men lost their lives hours before leaving for service in Afghanistan. Their last act couldn't have been more relaxed and mundane but it was to have the most tragic of consequences.

Brigadier Norton praised Sappers Mark Quinsey and Patrick Azimka, saying they were "magnificent".

The dead soldiers belonged to 25 Field Squadron of 38 (3-8) Engineer Regiment.

The regiment's been based here for over two years and the soldiers obviously thought they were safe.
