Elder Neglect

Are children and animals better protected under the law than elderly people in nursing homes?

That's a question that a Ballymena woman is asking after her mother was left unwashed in the home she's living in.

And she's had to make not one but two formal complaints to the Camphill nursing home in Ballymena.

Tara Mills reports.

Alan Herron from Help the Aged gives his view on the situation.

Last August we heard from two care assistants about the shocking standards they have seen in some local nursing homes.

The two women alleged nurses frequently go to sleep on duty, that older people are left sitting in soiled incontinence pads and that infections are easily spread by poor hygiene and shortages of basic equipment.

Because they'd lose their jobs if their identities were revealed, we have disguised who these care workers are. You may find some of what they have to say upsetting.

i think when care homes are like this its shocking, i went to one before and a man their was losing his marbles and he was getting worked up and the carers started shouting at him and shoved him hardly into a chair i was appaled.

I worked in nursing homes as a carer. Every day I witnessed low level physical abuse (rough handling) and heard verbal abuse of patients. You have to work there to know what goes on as the staff turn on the charm when families are around. I was shocked when I walked into staff room on first day everone was sitting using foul language and makaing fun of the patients. This wasn´t my idea of the type of people who should be in the in the caring profession. Pleasant staff came but didn´t stay long as they couldnd´t stand the bullying I was traaumatiseed by the whole experience .

i fully agree with sharon i removed my mother from camphill after 3 hrs of her admission it was unreal and the last experience i had was kintullagh before my mum sadly passed away 15 december 2008 and i could write a book all nursing homes need to be assessed on a regular basis which in the 4 months my mum was in kintullagh never happened.sharon i praise you and stand by you 100 percent.

"I have photos from when my mother was in a nursing home for only 48 hours, before she was admitted to hospital. The photos prove how much of a lack of care there was for her."

shocked client of camphill care home
As i watched your programme last night i was extremely shocked by your allegations so i would like to share my story with you.My mother up untill last year, was a resident in camphill where she later passed away.Never in all my mothers time there did i have to complain. The staff, from the home manager right down to the most junior members of staff showed my mother and our family and friends nothing but the upmost respect, care, love and compassion. The often unthankless job theese exceptional people do day in day out humbles me.My mother spent her time in camphill extremley happy and content.Whilst she could still communicate she always told us how much she loved the staff and how no amount of money in the world could repay theese people for what they did for her.I could not have asked for any better care for mum.At camphill she finally found peace.I shall be forever grateful and will never forget the team of people at camphill.Four seasons health care should be proud to call theese people employees.

My father has been a patient at camphill care home ballymena on and off as a few years, firstly staying there for respite care and now as a full time patient. I was really shocked to hear the story about the care there as i can swear i have never once had any complaints about the care my father receives. The home itself has always been neat and tidy, the staff are exceptional and its very obvious they care about each and every one of the residents. My fathers is always clean, fed and very happy in the home.

Further to your article last night about problems in care homes. I feel constrained to say that not all Elderly care is problematic, and would like to give a bit of praise to the team at Seapatrick Nursing Home (near Banbridge) who look after my mother, a Dementia sufferer. The team are really brilliant, showing REAL care and affection for mum. Not only is she clean, and well looked after, I see a real dedication from the staff, to her welfare and health. On admission, to Seapatrick, last year, after a very long period of poor physical health, the team have really turned her around. Her bed sores have healed. Her general health has improved, she’s recovering her weight loss, more importantly she is content. The team of carers come from all arts and parts, local folk, Filipinos, Indian and Botswanan. I have huge respect for all of them, they have a difficult job which they tackle with enthusiasm, good humour and great humanity.

Regarding the item on this evenings Newsline about the issue of elder abuse, and the proposal of the Western Health and Social Care Trust to close four of its residential care homes for older people. In particular Gortmore House in Omagh and transfer residents to alternative accomodation in the private sector.A vigorous local campaign has been mounted to save Gortmore house.

I listened with great sadness to the story of the lady in the Nursing Home in Ballymena. My own mother has been a resident of parkside Nursing Home in lisburn for past 7 years. The professionilism and standard of care provided by the staff is second to none. My mother is treated with the utmost respect and dignity, It is a very sad reflection on our society that no one is being held to account for the abuse suffered by the lady in the programme. Even more worrying, how many other elderly vulnerablepeople are suffering at the hands of so called "care homes"

Robert Davidson
It's not only happening in Nursing Home. My mother has been in hospital for six months with the exception of a few days, and only been washed 3 time. My sister had to asked to shower my mother herself.
