Crowd trouble at Linfield v Glentoran match

Football fixture ban

The IFA has banned the two biggest clubs in the Irish League from playing each other on public holidays.

The IFA ruling follows crowd trouble during the Linfield and Glentoran Boxing Day fixture last year.

Riot police were called when trouble broke our midway through the second half as missiles were thrown and seats from the grandstand were ripped out.

Both clubs have been fined £1,000 each but face losing thousands more in revenue as their traditional Boxing Day fixture has by far the highest attendance rate.

Linfield and Glentoran complain that the IFA decision penalises the clubs and the real soccer fans, not the trouble makers.

They have called for legislation to deal with soccer hooligans, as Mervyn Jess reports.

Raymond Kennedy

IFA President Raymond Kennedy says he does feel sympathy for the clubs involved, but says the decision was taken in the best interests of Irish football.
