Local councils have struck their rates for the 2009/2010 financial year.

District rates meet the costs of local services, such as bin collections and leisure facilities.

This year, ratepayers in the Fermanagh District Council area face the biggest percentage increase, at 8.52%.

That rise is closely followed by North Down Borough Council, which has put up domestic rates by 8.16%

Meanwhile, there is no increase to the domestic rate in either Castlereagh or Larne council areas.

It is believed that many households may have faced even higher district rate increases were it not for the £8,000,000 package announced by the Stormont Executive in January to help address local councils’ concerns about revenue levels.

Rates bills are issued in April each year and are calculated using a combination of district rates, regional rates and capital valuations of property.

Property valuations are assessed by the Land and Property Services and reflect what your home was worth on 1st January 2005.

If you would like to know more about how your rates bills is worked out, you can get information on the Land and Property Services website.
