Missing graveyard

Families search for children's graves in wildlife sanctuary

Imagine if you went to visit the grave of a relative and discovered it wasn't in the cemetery, but was on the other side of a fence, with no visible markings and just out of reach.

That's what happened to people in west Belfast who found that land where many young children were buried, had been inadvertently sold to the Ulster Wildlife Trust.

The graves in question date from the 1930s to the 1970s. Now the families affected want that portion of ground back.

Watch Conor Macauley's BBC Newsline report.

Toni Maguire

Toni Maguire is an archaeologist who is working with the families to help them identity the graves of their loved ones.

Andrew Upton is the Director of Conservation with the Ulster Wildlife Trust. He says the Trust is working to resolve the issue but says it was assured there were no graves on the Bog Meadows before it bought the land nine years ago.
