The numbers out today are further evidence - if any were needed - of the seriousness of the recession we're entering. In the last year the number of people out of a job has gone up by a massive 50%. We haven't seen such a rise in a single year since during the Troubles, in the early seventies. They were surprisingly optimistic, although most recognised that they were not facing an easy task.
