Carnegie Library

Carnegie Library

It has stood on the side of the Falls Road for more than a hundred years, now there's a plan to give the Carnegie Library the prominence it deserves.

Built in 1908 with money from the American steel magnate it has survived some of the most turbulent times in our history.

Belfast City Council plans to light the exterior of the building at night, and have spent more than 15,000 pounds on the project.

Conor Macauley reports.

We also have an extended interview with Councillor Tom Hartley.

Have Your Say

What's your earliest memory of a library and what do you use them for?

Towards the end of the 1950's I remember going regularly with my dad to the Library in Lisburn . At that time the Library was a big old victorian building situated near the Railway Station on the site where the Law Courts are now. It was very quiet in the Library except for the creaking of the floors. The wooden shelves were crammed with books high above my young head. The building might have seemed austere and even spooky to a young child, but my memories of it are of a warm and interesting place. At that time I recall my dad regularly getting half a dozen books which he enjoyed reading. However I do not recall the childrens section and I imagine if there were childrens books they were not the wonderful books available nowadays for children. We now have a beautiful new Library in Lisburn which not only has books, CDs, and loads of computers but also hosts story telling, music events and book launches. I am sorry the old Library was demolished, we have not preserved enough of our old buildings in Northern Ireland and I also regret that nowadays community events and notices cannot be advertised in the Library.

I love my local library, i remember it from when i was young taking books out each week. Now I use the internet in the university library to help me with research for my degree
