Flowers in memory of the Police Officers

Road Carnage

Seven families are grieving after a weekend of dreadful accidents on our roads. In one crash alone four police officers lost their lives.

Perhaps what's poignant about their deaths is that they were on their way to help colleagues when their car crashed. And local people made frantic efforts to save them but couldn't.

That accident happened just outside Warrenpoint - Our reporter Mervyn Jess reports for BBC Newsline.

Family heartache

Mervyn spoke to Jim Wells of the DUP and PJ Bradley of the SDLP on the impact on the community

One of the four families has had the misfortune to deal with a sudden tragedy before. None of the families today wanted to talk to the media. BBC Newsline's Julian O'Neill reports.
