No Carols this Christmas

A prominent Dublin shop has turned down playing Christmas music this year.

A council noise inspector was called into one of Dublin's big stores, Brown Thomas, when someone complained about the volume of the music.

It was deemed to be acceptable but can the same be said for all shops? Or was the shopper just being a grinch! David Maxwell reports.

Have Your Say

Do Christmas Carols put you in a festive mood or bring out your inner Scrooge?

When you've worked in retail for over 10 years and had to listen to the same old christmas tunes year after year, on repeat every day for 2 months, it gets quite soul destroying and frankly depressing! When you've had these songs drilled into your head for so long, it starts to make you dread this time of year and want it over as soon as possible! That ruins the whole experience for people who work in retail! It's bad enough that we don't get any time off (except the 25th) over the Christmas period, but having it all ruined by that music just makes me sick!

Sandrine Patton
I think Christmas Carols are being played far too early in the shops! it should be kept for the month of December... And they should only be played as a background music, barely noticeable...

Michael Johnston
I can understand the customer complaining if the volume of the music being played was too high. Apart from that I don't see anything wrong with Christmas music being played during Christmas time. And when I worked in retail I had to listen to the same songs played over and over again all day long. It really doesn't bother me. In fact it puts me in a cheerful mood.

Sean MacCormac
I think christmas carols get everyone in a good mood for christmas, though if they are played too early (like in early november) it makes people angry and shows that christmas is purely commercial.
