Down Care Homes

Homes in Dromore and Kilkeel in county Down will be shut down in the spring of 2010, if a proposal to rationalise services gets the go-ahead.

The Southern Health Trust says the kind of care people want is changing and it needs to respond to that. Our reporter Conor Macauley went to meet some of the people who could be affected.

Winnifred Myles

The Trust has been told to make savings. They also say that the type of care people want is changing and they have to respond to that. More people want to be supported in their own home, and these care homes sometimes have people sharing washing and eating facilities and sometimes bedrooms.

The proposed closures go out for twelve weeks consultation, and a decision will be made in March 2009, with closure (if its confirmed) by 2010.

At Skeagh Home in Dromore, Conor spoke to Winnifred Myles who is 89 and has lived in Skeagh Home for eight years.

Roberta Young and Margaret Gamble

Roberta Young and her mother Margaret Gamble use Skeagh Home as respite care for Margaret to Roberta a break. They are very pleased with the services the home provides and do not want to see it closed.

Ulster Unionist Councillor Carol Black opposes the closure of Skeagh Home, and spoke on camera to explain why.

At Slieve Roe house in Kilkeel Conor met 80 year old Danny Cunningham, who has lived there for ten years.

Ben Patterson

He also spoke to Ben Patterson, who is 88 and has been resident there for a year and a half. Both men are very happy with the care they receive.
