George Best

Angel George Best

George Best has been immortalised in many ways, but none more controversially than in a new painting by a Manchester artist which depicts the footballer as Christ ascending into heaven watched by two naked women.

In the footballer's birthplace - east Belfast - clergymen and local representatives have labelled the picture "offensive", but it's been praised by George Best's family.

Natasha Sayee reported the story for BBC Newsline.

sarah

bob
i don't think that is right on the picher about thenaked women because any one could see it!!!

c.p
i sdont know why people are geting upset about this and by the way this was not a money making sceem as it was not painted by the best family and ithink u all need to thin of it as he wanted to live his life the way he wanted not the way anyone else wanted so i think the family like this as it is there to remind them of there george

A C
Fantastic. It captures perfectly Best's god like abilities. The two ladies at the bottom are also brilliant.More of this please, damn the christian brigade. Time to move into the 21st century.

Steven
I just want to say firstly that this is a pathetic attempt to be 'original' This is not original. Its called novelty. Secondly, the artist has probably no idea what the Transfiguration is all about so he has disconnected himself from his own creativity and his own self = phoneyism. Thirdly its a classical painting with George Bests face stuck on. Why?? Its the sort of thing you would see in a tacky souvenir shop, like the Mona Lisa with the ciggy hanging out of her mouth. And that my friends is why the painting is rubbish.

PETER GREEN LURGAN
YOU LOT NEED TO GET OUT MORE.THAT'S THE PROBLEM WITH THIS DUMP OF A COUNTRY.STILL LIVING IN THE 15TH CENTURY.GEORGE BEST WOULD HAVE LOVED TO HAVE SEEN THIS PAINTING.HOW COME WE HAD MORE CLERGYMEN CONDEMNING THIS COMPARED TO THE DISGACEFUL BEHAVIOUR METED OUT ON THOSE LITTLE GIRLS GOING TO HOLY CROSS SCHOOL IN 2001.

Doak
real news for you, God never existed!George was the best and was real, Fact

tommy
he was a drunk, and he was given a second chance and wasted it and to do a painting like this sick

Thomas
I think this painting, and some of the comments already made, just show the attitude and thoughts of the public in N Ireland today towards spiritual matters, faith, and respect and love to our Lord and Saviour. I won't give the painting creedance by commenting on it, but I think it's sad on attitudes towards the Church, faith, and things of God.

martin jasper belfast
i think its a great piece of art depicting a legend

David Davies - Belfast
i am very sad to hear about this blamsphemous painting "O that man would prasie the LORD for his goodness' rather than always blamsphemy His Son Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, he loves us greatly saving us from sin to those who put their trust in Him. I would like to see the painting removed and destroyed. "To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. A'-men." (Jude v 25)

Seamus
I think there are worse things happening in the world. Should we really be getting so worked up about this?

Morgan & Zandra Johnson, Portadown
We dare the artist to paint anyone as the Pope or Mohammed in similar vain.We reckon that is where his cowardice would be manifestly obvious!

Morgan Johnson
Scripturally it is forbidden to look upon naked women. As Jesus Christ was and remains absolutely sinless and will be bringing those who committed their lives to Him to be with Him throught Eternity he stands in stark contrast to George Best who, I understand, committed his life to Christ prior to his passing. As a Christain I find this painting so horifically offensive that I would wish to see it - and any copies - permanently destroyed and the artist given opportunities to find what Jesus Christ has done for him.

s foster
Good or Bad art? Who decides? I don't have a proplem with the painting. Art is one person's interpretation of a person / event via pictures instead of words. I think it depicts George quite well, he was no angel but enjoyed his life and his women to say the least. People in this country should get a grip it seems they all want to go out of their way to get offended. If you don't like it don't look at it. Live and let live - don't judge.

Sandra
Very sad to see this and disgusted that it should even be praised. Serves no purpose and needs to be removed

D.W.Richards
BURN IT

William
I think it is disgraceful

Robert from Coleraine
To represent Christ as a drunken failure is disgusting. were Best to be painted as Mohammed the Prophet, the artist would probably have been assassinated by now.

Godard - Planet earth
Perhaps the artist is making comment on the state of christianity, or how George was worshipped during his life, it could be anything. Perhaps we are all looking too much on the surface and have missed the artists point completely or perhaps it is just glorification of George Best. In short, it doesn't matter, it seems to me this is only a painting. Should this really be such an important topic? Worse things happen at sea...

Anne Savage
The painting is higly offensive and sacraligious.

BrianDillon
George would have loved the picture not enough naked ladies and no champayne

Ivan Ross
An absolute disgrace, no matter what the artist says, he is putting Best on the same par as Jesus. It may be called art but it is offensive to me as a Christian'

John Coleraine
It's only a bloody painting and as I remember him, he favorite hobby was bed hopping.

Darren Lisburn
This picture is a TOTAL DISGRACE! Getrid off it now!!! George was a brilliant footballer but was he ever God? NO! Paint a picture of what he was instead of something he never was.

Raymond Chambers- Belfast
Very Offensive and disgracful painting. How Could the bst family give this their full support.Just wondering if Dick Best(George`s father) was still alive would he have backed it dont think so

Henry and Doris Holloway
My wife and I would like to register our abhorrence at the blasphemous portrayal of George Best as looking like Jesus. The painting is totally unacceptable and should be destroyed. I dread to think what would happen had he been painted to look like the prophet Mohamed.

Derek
I find the painting of George Best untasteful, disgraceful, highly offensive and believe it serves no purpose.

Samuel
I THINK THE PICTURE IS OFFENSIVE, i'm sure there r many other christians feel the same as i do, it's a shame because i'm a fan of best but this leaves a bitter taste.

D.G Rosetti
- Painting is great ! ... but more female nudity required... I may not know much about art ... etc etc !

Victoria, East Belfast
Wel done Michael Browne its a super painting lets buy it an put in new, renovated ulster museum, George i believe wd understand the 'spirituality' esp the grapes!

Briege belfast.
The new painting depicting George Best as Christ ascending into heaven is in poor taste.they already give george best wings by naming the airport after him.he dosnt need anymore.

Margaret from Belfast
"I think the painting is digusting

Mr Balmer - BT15
I think the george best painitng is horrendous.

jean caughey Ballywalter
very offensive im sure his late dad would not approve

Michael, Belfast.
the painting of George Best is a fantastic representation of how he lived his life. The man was seen as a god by millions of people around the world when he was alive and I have no doubt that he is being treated as one in the after life.

D Dunlop.
The Best painting is disgusting.

Amy from Rathfriland
I think there is no need for half of the atention that has been given 2 george best since his death. Yeah he was a gr8 footballer but there r many other gr8 people that hav died that devoted their lives 2 helpin others which is far more praiseworthy yet they go unnoticed.

anne, Belfast
disgraceful,he is wearing too many clothes!

Maurice
Artistically, a load of rubbish. It insults George Best's memory and contributes nothing except sensationalist headlines

David Duly
Its a disgrace, to think of the blasphemy that is so open and explicit is awful. I think the Churches should whip round and see about getting it removed.

George Preston
Deeply offensive

john mcauley
a disgusting painting, and filthy pornography

Tina
I am very saddened that anyone would paint such a picture. I think it is in extremely bad taste and am very hurt and offended by it. The artist and George's family, however, seem to take the opposite view - is this just another "money making" project for them?

emma
A TOTAL DISGRACE. I think this person has NO respect for christianity. If this was done to another religion in the east, it would cause a lot of choas. it takes away the meaning of religion and is very offence. George Best was a good footballer though he was NOT GOD!!!!

David McCook
I find it offensive. George wanted to remembered for his football. I dont't see anything about football in this picture.

James Carlin
One does not have to be a Christian in order to find this offensive. It is offensive because it's designer intended to give offense. It couldn't be otherwise. How could anyone be so obtuse as to fail to predict the annoyance that this would cause to all civilised people of whatever religious conviction. This is an attack on all religions including Islam who holds Christ to be one of the greatest prophets. I wonder if the coward responsible for this monstrosity was aware that he was also offending Islam.

Neil McCabe
I find this extremely offensive, the man was not God he was a footballer please put it into perspective.

paul
i do not think that anthing should be done to "honour" a drunk who was given a second chance at life and blew it!!!

S. B
Disgraceful; Depicting Jesus as a real person.

H.Doherty.
Thou shalt have no other Gods before me.

Hilary Coffey
Offensive and blasphemous

joe mc gurk

sadiemcmeekin
It's disgusting,very bad taste

sadiemcmeekin
It's disgusting,very bad taste

frances
Good art tells you some new truth that maybe you hadn't realised before. This is bad art. It tells you an untruth about George Best, is very upsetting to Christian-minded folk, and is slightly pornographic. I would hope George's blood relations will have the decency to dissociate themselves from it.

bobby scott
I dont see what the ministers are fussing about--- IT`S ONLY A BLOODY PAINTING!

s.meegan
out rages, and very offensivethis pushes the boundtries out too far

Harry Best
First I must make it clear that I have no family connection with George Best.I am totally sick of hearing about this great man and now he has reached the highest level and has become Christ himself. I'm sure his family are deligheted. Can anyone tell me what George Best ever done to warrent this sainthood. Did he look after his family when he was alive. Did he ever give anything back to his fans by getting involved in any type of charity work or help any underprivilaged children to inspire them. I think not indeed he was the complete opposite and set a very poor example. George had everything and destroyed it including his liver transplant. Forgive me if I do not bow down and worship him and if he is in heaven then I will not be going there.

Aaron Thompson
This painting is blasphemy not only because its making out that George Best is Jesus but also the two nude women. There's isn't a painting like that of Jesus. What does George Best's brother in law know what he would think of that painting. Show George Best as a Footballer that was what he was best at. If he was here today im sure he would be against it because he became a Christian before he died. The painting on the wall in east belfast is great but this one is terrible.

sam hamilton
it's only a painting

Sharon
Typical of Britain to even consider allowing this attrocity! If he was depicted as Mohammed, heads would roll. The Best family are a disgrace for okaying it.

Eric Stockdale
Enough is Enough George Best should not be compared to Jesus in such a manner. He was a fantastic footballer but this has crosse the line for me.

Rosemary Stockdale
I was absolutely disgusted with the painting of George Best. I was a fan of his football skill/natural ability but this latest tribute has sickened me to the core. Enough is Enough!!!!

Frances Ballyclare
I think this is a disgraceful portrtrayal of George Best as Jesus.

paula
For godness sake have we not enough problems in this country to start debating over a picture of a sporting icon,it's just a picture alot of people have to much time on their hands

Gerry Leonard
I'm a United fan,but this picture of George Best is in very poor taste to say the least. He may have been God like to some fans but he was no angel!!!!!

An other
Has everyone forgotten that Georgewas a drunkard and a wife beater not heavenly.

alexandra ball
the painting is an eyesore and truly horrible. there are so many nice murals of george portrayed as what he was, an excellent footballer and belfast boy. this painting is just not appropriate and i personally find it very offensive. the rev mcilveen was correct in his comments saying it was pornographic, i totally agree.

William Montgomery
Anyone who takes offense to this is just a small minded fool. There is one big difference between god and George Best - Best actually existed, he is not just some fictional bronze age myth.

Carol
Disgusting - an insult to George's memory
