Police Money

The minister in charge of the police's purse strings has hit out at the policing board for saying that the chief constable doesn't have enough money

This is despite his budget of more than three billion pounds for the next three years.

Paul Goggins says the funding package is extremely generous - and that the board can't go running to the government every time it encounters financial problems.

Our Home Affairs Correspondent Vincent Kearney reports.

Fifty fifty recruitment is a cornerstone of the new police service. Today the Chief Constable signalled that because of massive pressures on his budget he may be forced to suspend taking on new officers. That, of course, would have big political implications because at least half of the officers employed every year must be Catholic.

So what will all this mean for the number of officers on the beat?
