A boy has died after falling into the River Thames in Oxford.

Aown Dogar, 13, got into difficulties in the water at Donnington Bridge on Thursday evening with rescue crews called to help.

He was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital where he died. Police are not treating his death as suspicious.

In a statement, Cheney School described Aown as a "much loved student within Cheney due to his great sense of humour and fun loving personality".

It said the school community was "deeply saddened" by the loss.

"He loved both football and cricket, and was a member of the school cricket team," the statement said.

"He was a pleasure to teach as he really valued his education. He will be sorely missed by the whole school community and we he will always be remembered with great fondness."

Some 100 school children released paper boats into the river during a special ceremony.

A book of condolence has been put out at the school and the school counsellors and nurse are offering support to other pupils.
