Engineers have begun work on a project to improve the quality of water in rivers near Penrith.
Water firm United Utilities is spending £6.7m improving its sewer system in Langwathby, Skirwith and Winskil.
The work will include expanding and upgrading Langwathby sewage works and building a new 5km pipeline.
A company spokesman said the work would improve the treatment of waste water which is returned to the River Eden.
