A £30m secondary school for 1,200 pupils is to be built on the site of an Army garrison in Berkshire.
Wokingham Borough Council plans to construct it at Arborfield, after the MoD sells it in 2015, as part of a development of 3,500 houses.
Charlotte Haitham-Taylor, executive member for children's services, said it was "exciting news" and plans were in place for a "great school".
The Department for Education said the new school was "viable and necessary".
It would be either a free school or an academy, it added.
The school will be built by September 2016. There is also an option to expand it to 1,500 places.
Ms Haitham-Taylor said: "There is a lot more to the school than the location and we will now be working closely with local parents on crucial issues such as the ethos, curriculum, staffing and general character of the school in order to make sure it is a place that pupils are proud to attend and teachers are excited to teach at."
