A £2m cycleway will be created on a busy stretch of road that runs between Reading and Wokingham.
The seven-mile route will run the length of Berkshire's A329 from the Three Tuns junction to Coppid Beech roundabout and work will start in July.
New lighting will also be installed, bus shelters in poor condition replaced and footpaths resurfaced.
The Wokingham Borough Council project is part-funded by the Local Sustainable Transport (LSTF) fund.
The cycleway will be created in four phases and the first phase, focusing on the stretch between the Three Tuns junction and the Showcase Cinema roundabout, is expected to take 12 to 14 weeks.
Developers' contributions are also supporting the project.
