Bus tech to trigger traffic light changes

Buses travelling along one of Sheffield's main roads could soon be able to automatically trigger traffic light changes to make journeys faster.

The scheme, which would cost just over £900,000, would be implemented on the A61 Chesterfield Road, according to a report to Sheffield City Council.

As well as signal-change technology, the plans also include improved waiting facilities, real-time information at bus stops and a yellow box junction for the Derbyshire Lane turning.

The budget for the scheme is set to go forward for approval at the council's finance and performance policy committee on Monday.

The funding for the project has come from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

It is part of the Connecting Sheffield programme of work to encourage people to use the bus more by providing improved facilities.

Connecting Sheffield also aims to get more people to walk and cycle.
