Live at the BBC Proms: the BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jakub Hrůša with soloist Lukáš Vondráček in Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No.3. Plus Janáček's Sinfonietta. Presented by Martin Handley, live from the Royal Albert Hall, London. Vítězslava Kaprálová: Suita rustica Sergey Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor c. 8.25 Interval: Nigel Simeone joins Martin Handley live at the Royal Albert Hall to look ahead to the big highlights in the upcoming week at the BBC Proms. c.8.45 Leoš Janáček: Sinfonietta Lukáš Vondráček (piano) BBC Symphony Orchestra Jakub Hrůša (conductor) An afternoon spent listening to a military band in a Bohemian park inspired the arresting fanfares and jagged folk-rhythms of Janáček’s last and best-loved orchestral work, composed 100 years ago, the Sinfonietta: less a conventional symphony than a sequence of sonic frescoes. Jakub Hrůša and the BBC Symphony Orchestra are joined by ‘extraordinary’ Czech pianist Lukáš Vondráček for the Everest of Romantic piano concertos – Rachmaninov’s Third, for many years performed only by the composer himself. The concert opens with the haunting folk melodies and dancing rhythms of Kaprálová’s Suita rustica.
