Moss Siders name City streets

The winners of a competition to name the new streets that are being built on the Moss Side’s most famous site, Manchester City’s former home of Maine Road, have been announced - and there's a few surprises.

The contest, which was being run as part ofManchester City Council's 'My Place, My Space' Maine Road arts programme – a project delivering public art and involvement as part of the new development – saw some 350 Mancunian residents suggest names for the roads.

The Council had asked that people think about more than just the Manchester City connection and wanted the suggestions to relate to the area's rich heritage and history, look forward to the future or commemorate a source of local pride, like a local hero, heroine or group.

And the winning names, chosen by a panel consisting of representatives from the City Council, the site developers Lowry Homes and residents, do just that.

There's Bilsborrow Road and St Edward's Road, whose names refer to the schools in the area which are being demolished to make way for a state-of-the-art primary school in the development.

Alongside them, there's Carnival Place and Sunshine Place, both of which were chosen to reflect the positivity and fun that are generated in the area in the summertime, particularly around the Caribbean Carnival.

And, of course, there is a space for one street that recalls the area's most famous time, the appropriately named Blue Moon Way, the name of which was suggested by nine year old Jordan McIntosh for his uncle, who's a massive City fan.

Councillor Alistair Cox, chair of the Maine Road Steering Group, said they had "a great response to our call for street name suggestions and it was very difficult to choose five."

He added that he felt that "the winning names reflect the importance Maine Road has played in peoples' lives in the past and the significance of the development for the future of the area."
