Council set to challenge post office closures

Businesses in the borough are planning to join with the council in its plans to support those post offices threatened with closure.

Six post offices in the borough are on the proposed list of some 2,500 scheduled for closure nationwide.

The impact of these closures will be significant for some sections of the community say campaigners.

Cabinet member for regeneration, Councillor Tim Pollard said: “We are extremely disappointed that the Post Office is going ahead with the closure of post offices in highly deprived communities.

“Some of these post offices are in highly deprived communities where people rely on being able to walk to their local branch. Expecting people who may not have their own transport, or who may have a debilitating or long term illnesses to travel up to a mile to their nearest post office is completely unacceptable.

“We will do everything that we can to oppose their closure and we are calling on residents to write to Post Office Ltd and their local MP.”

The proposed closures in Croydon are:

• 298 High Street, Croydon
• 104 Bensham Lane, Thornton Heath
• 75 Central Hill, Norwood
• 22 Selhurst Road, South Norwood
• 2 The Parade, Mitcham Road, and
• 217 Chipstead Valley Road, Coulsdon
• 7 Hermitage Lane, South Streatham

Post Office Ltd has now started a public consultation on the proposal for London. The public will have until 2 April to let the company know what difficulties they will face regarding access to future post office services.
