Eastway Gone But Not Forgotten

The Users of the Eastway cycle circuit are not happy. Their popular and much used cycle circuit was closed to make way for olympic development. Michael Humphreys fears for the future of the sport and the youngsters who have an eye on 2012.

With facilities for road racing and off road mountain biking, Eastway cycle centre at Lea Valley Park was a magnet for athletes and bike enthusiasts.

In November 2006 it was closed for redevelopment of the Olympic Park. The (ODA) Olympic Delivery Authority has offered an interim site and a replacement for Eastway once the games are over.

But the replacement on offer has been criticised as inadequate by the Eastway users' group. Michael Humphreys is the chair of this group and is determined to see a viable alternative.

With levels of cycling rising faster in London than anything transport planners can predict, he feels that we are being short changed.

I was an Eastway regular back in the 1980s and although we travelled from Suffolk, we considered it our home circuit and loved it. I even won there once! Last year I raced there again after a 23 year absence just to say my farewell to a great facility. Sadly these hard won facilities are so easily destroyed by people who think they know best.It's a disgrace that London doesn't have a velodrome but at what cost? Very sad.

Eastway was such a great course and i won some of my first ever circuit races there! sad to see it go! but to be honest its going for something much better and it would be great to have an indoor velodrome around here finally :D

HI, I used Eastway from it's early days I saw my brother ride his first race there and I know he was there on the very last day that eastway was open. I agree it is a very sad thing see this great location go. Eastway was and always will be a great cycling location and I hope the games will provide us will a replacement ASAP.Lets hope we get it how long have we been waiting for another Harlow track??Ray Worster.

The Same Has Been Happening About Swimming Pools! In Bristol They Keep Closing All The Swimming Pools And Me And My Sister Both Swim And Are Finding It Harder And Harder To Do Our Training! They Are Cutting Facilities In Schools Aswell In Regards To Sports!Its Stupid!
