In a bid to lower crime and public disorder and create a safer atmosphere in the district centre, the council has launched street drinking ban in the area. Croydon’s stepping up its fight against crime and anti-social behaviour on the streets. The latest target in the war on crime and public disorder is Thornton Heath where a street drinking has been imposed. Similar to the restrictions already in place in central Croydon and South Norwood, the ban would limit the consumption of alcohol within certain designated public areas, notably around Thornton Heath station, including Brigstock Road, Melfort Road and the High Street where street drinkers regularly gather and cause a nuisance. The move comes as a result of complaints from local residents and businesses who were fed up with the number of anti-social behaviour and crime in the area. Cllr Steve O’Connell, deputy leader and cabinet member for public protection and crime reduction said: “Groups of rowdy and intoxicated street drinkers can be intimidating to the average passer-by and incidents of anti-social behaviour, however small, have a detrimental effect on the local community. PenaltiesThe police will have power to enforce the ban. And, anyone who refuses to stop drinking or to hand over their drink when asked to do so, could find themselves faced with a criminal charge.
