La Machine

Giant spider emerges from cocoon in derelict building.

A giant 60-foot spider, disturbed by demolition work in the heart of Liverpool, has emerged from its cocoon!

Well, that's what the morning commuters were being told after seeing the spectacular monster dangling on the side of the derelict Concourse Tower in Lime Street. It must have appeared like a scene from the Quatermass Experiment, but don't panic! It's not actually a real spider but a £1.8 million creation of French animatronics company La Machine.

It was commissioned by the city council as a major piece of street theatre for the European Capital of Culture 08 celebrations.

The movement of the 30-tonne creature over five days is expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors before the finale on Sunday evening.
