Would you pay more?

Members of Lincolnshire Police Authority are awaiting the results of an online survey asking residents whether they'd be prepared to pay more council tax for a better service.

Last year, the police precept was increased by almost 80 per cent - which was later capped by the Government at 26 per cent.

BBC Radio Lincolnshire's Tim Iredale reports:

Have Your Say

Would you pay more for a better police service?

The BBC reserves the right to edit comments submitted.

Bob
NO. Is this so they can pay top coppers more exorbitant perks

graham
no i would not pay more as we never see a policeman where i live .only with speed cameras.

Coral Burgess
I would pay more as at present not a efficient service we need more police on motorbikes , we see none at present. We need a better relationship between public and police and far more police cars on road to check bad driving.(speed camera cannot do this ) the service has gone backwards we deserve better.

denise from sleaford
No i wouldnt pay more for the police .whats this about a survey about would you pay more. was it done in Lincoln? mind you this is sleaford.

observer
I personaly would love to see a system set up were the police recieve the funds from crimes that could be issued with on the spot fines i,e such as all minor motoring offences including parking illegally, cyclists with no bell, brakes or lights, Drunk and disorderly, unsociable behaviour and the dicarding of litter in public places, then perhaps the police woild be able to fund themselves a bit and the tax payer would not have to stump up so much another intresting fact is in America one often sees state police cruise down the roads & streets when not busy actually getting out of the vehicle and put parking fines on cars or perform other duties and also make time to chat to the community giving those in the comunity that personal touch, our boys do not do this any more perhaps if they did they may well get Know more of what is going on in our comunities and we might get back to having a regular police force back in our towns as the cost cutting exercise on the police in lincolnshire years ago decimated our resdent local police forces years ago.

Claire
I am not prepared to comment on the current service offered by the police or state whether I would pay more for the service without having more information. I just wonder where all the people who have commented on this thread have done their research and got their facts from (The biased media perhaps?!? Or your one-sided assumptions when you do see a police presence?). If you think Police Officers and Staff have such an easy job and get paid lots with a good pension - why not join them?!??!?

a road user
No I would not pay more, they'll probably put more speed cameras up to collect the money.

denise
no i wouldnt pay any more for the police only time you see them is when they are in there cars, and for the pcsos they are just cheap policing , and what powers do they have, you dont see them on the streets at night do you,we wouldnt get a better police service if we paid more, they would just wast the money, take there cars off them they can save money that way make them walk all ride bikes like they use to

sjw
Certainly NOT. Lincs CC were bragging tat their cameras have contributed to over 2000 arrests,so why do we need more police? What we need is police doing their job.

DIRK
Definitely NOT!The authorities have got it into their heads that people should pay a tidy sum for a service, and then pay again on top of that to get the job done properly. What on earth has gone so wrong with this damned country?

W. Masters
A resounding NO! The number of civilians employed at Nettleham is outrageous.Try putting them all in the old Church Lane H.Q.

Phil
Certainly not. It's noticeable that the survey has now closed. I wonder if they made sure all police officers got their vote in?I understand that they still hae several £Millions in the bank from last years pay award and was going to ask about this under the Freedom of Information Act, but guess what? That particular page on their website is not working!

Craig
I would pay for a better service but like the rest of public sector services bloated and bureaucratic. We should be getting far better value for the money we do spend before we consider spending more!!!

Michael (another pensioner)
NO, the police precept should NOT be increased. Promises of improved performance in the past have not materialised. Last year, at a meeting in the village hall, we were told by Angela Crowe(reference last year's attempted large increase in the police precept) that it was "definitely a one-off and 2009 - 10 would not see a request for a big jump in the precept". The govt capped last year's massive increase but the police are out on the same trail again. It is very, very rare to see police presence on our 'village trail' (Metheringham) so what are they asking us to pay for?. Give and take comes to mind.

Anne
What survey? I haven't been consulted. Our Council Tax is already for too expensive and the services we get are absolutely dire and practically non-existent. I thought the capped increase last year was far too much at 26%.

Richard Leighton
Definitely NOT. It's time we got real value for money from the Lincolonshire Police Service. It does the force no service when the Chief Constable bleats on to Government for more funding when they are unable to isolate what real improvement in benefits we have seen over the past few yeears from hhis force.Indeed from personal experience, I have seen a woeful deterioration in the usefulness of Lincolnshire Traffic Police over the past few years.I cast your attention back to the body discovered beside the A1 around Long Bennington. Two police cars had "driven" past the scene and noticed nothing [are they surprised, missing bodies don't generally stand-up and wave at passing police cars!]. It wasn't until a "Bobby" got out of the car and did some "old fashioned" leg-work that the poor man's body was discovered in a dyke beside the road.Call me strange but there is nothing "old fashioned" about doing a job properly that you are paid to undertake. "Following footprints in the snow" leading from the scene of a crime is not "state of the art" detective work, it is doing the job your are trained to do SOLVE CRIMES!If the Police Service can prove their worth, and at this moment in time they cannot do that, then we can talk about US, the tax-payer, paying more. Results means prizes not the Chief Constable stamping his feet and crying "We can't do it without more money". Yes you can. Manage your resources in a more productive way and prove your worth.RANT OVER!

Alan Dixon
No!! when you see all the stupid jobs lincs Police advertise...they could save lots of money by sacking half their staff

Tony Goor
Certainly not. The service when dealing with Lincolnshire police has never been good, but a 26 per cent increase to pay for it is an insult! They should have learnt a lesson from last year's fiasco.

Graham
Giving more money to the police won't result in more officers on the beat. The money will be spent on "consultants reports" and "diversity training".

Merle Markham
No disrespect to our Lincolnshire Police force, but at a time when so many are struggling just to survive there is no way I can afford to pay any more on my council tax for anything, there has got to be another way to fund this noble cause. If the banks can be bailed out and pay themselves bonuses, there must be another way.

N Timm
We are in difficult times. Everyone is having to cut back to keep within budget. The Lincolnshire Police must do the same.

Lady Pensioner
Most definitely not, I was brought up on an old saying "cut your coat according to your cloth" its about time the Police Authority did the same.A housewife spends her life managing a budget , maybe its time you put one of us in charge, heads would roll, time to get rid of some of the dead wood.

Michael. Pointon.
I say NO to increase, maybe have a change of mind, if you could, have a guarantee police coverage, in our area. We still have the need for a Police presence.

pensioner
I say to the police authority start managing your budget and stop asking for more money from us taxpayers I have a small company pension[not inflated ones, like you get] and still have to pay my full council tax, which already takes a big lump out of money.how about the top earners in the police autority taking a pay cut or better still leave the job and put the money back in the coffers

Mrs Phillippa Tremlett Ropsley Lincs
Indeed I would NOT pay more for council tax! Outrageous the bills are! I'm disabled, over 60 and unable to use buses, and I don't get any subs at all for travel from my council. If it wasn't for wonderful neighbours here, I'd be really stuffed. Yes - I know I get a DWP help with mobility - believe me it all goes on taxis and helping others to ferry me about. The services for those who're disabled here in Lincolnshire are disgraceful and disgusting. And still they want more money. It's only the fact that if I don't pay my council tax, some poor hard-pressed soul would probably pay it for me, so I cannot even make a statement of how disgusted I am by refusing to pay. Outrageous, greedy, and rubbish services! Utterly fed up with the lot of them!

robert gibbs
As a pensioner I sincerely hope that council tax is kept to a minimum, so my answer is no.

h.truswell
NO I would not,the council tax is far to high as it is>do like the Surrey police and axe jobs[Daily Express 11th Feb 2009]

Alan Timmis
Futher to my earlier note where I said I was not aware of anyone invited to participate in the police survey. After searching I have now found, on tha police web site, the survey in question and discovered closing date was 12 Feb 2009. I wonder how many people who may have been interested were actually aware of the survey or it's location? Certainly I wasn't, and am still very doubtful of any credability the police may claim for it.

Alan Timmis
I would be against an increase in police precept until it can be shown the Authority is cabable of using present funds responsibly to best effect. We only need look at Police job adverts that appear weekly in the Lincolnshire Echo to see where a great deal of money is being misspent. Endless empire building administrative posts have been and still are being created within the force which do not result in more Bobbies on the beat. Pay and conditions for such jobs generally being far better than available to those local people who are expected to fund the jobs.I have serious reservations about credability of the on-line survey. I know of no-one who has been invited to participate and suspect the survey is selective not representative of local views generally.

Mr.P.Tasker
I would not support any increase in demand for payment for policing. Try economising on the excessive amount spent on traffic policing. Economies on police use of cars for non emergency enquiries. Show us that policemen have the ability to walk. Get your priorities right and you wil get more support, but keep your demands sensible this time.

Gill Rogers
It is unbelievable that in the present climate the Police service are trying to blackmail the residents of Lincolnshire. What exactly do they want, exactly what difference would it make and why dont the police make a few cutbacks, if you look at the local newspapers they are always advertising for the most obscure posts. No one has asked me or any of my friends and neighboursDigusted

fed up tax payer
no i would not, why should we pay more money for the service that we get. perfect example when there is an incident you normally see three or four cars with single occupancy arriving on scene and the majority of the time they are from the same police station, likewise when they are trying to collect extra revenue,ie vehicle checks again they seem to turn mob heavy with there own indivual vehicles, it would be different if they had to pay for their own vehicles and their fuel. also the extra money that they want is only going to pay for their gold plated pensions, do i need to say anymore in this present climate.

Gil
Most definitely not.

Ian Duncan
Definately not. We already pay 130% more than we did 10 years ago an average rise of 13% per year. Its not on

Paul T
The Police only target easy cases so they don't deserve more money. Leave the motorists alone who pay taxes so that you exist.
