Curtains for the Theatre Royal

More than a hundred years of theatre history in Lincoln could be over. That's the message from the manager of the Theatre Royal in the city - after considering the impact of a reduction in council funding.

Last week Lincoln City Council announced they will no longer provide a yearly grant of nearly £180,000 to the theatre. After taking time to consider the implications, it was announced today that come then of March next year, the venue will close.

The building, which is listed, belongs to the city council and is run by the theatre entrepreneur Chris Moreno.

The city council says it's conducting a review of all its services to save money - and that cuts to other services may follow. Portfolio holder for economic regeneration, tourism and culture at Lincoln City Council - Councillor Hilton Spratt, says in tough economic times, there has to be priorities.

The theatre has attracted many famous celebrities over the years including Henry Blofeld and Freddie Starr this month. Shows are expected to continue until the curtain finally comes down next year.

Chris Moreno spoke to Melvyn Prior.

As an ex-Londoner, I love theatreland but only 'good' plays and these have been very few since I have lived here. Further, car parking is an absolute pain, especially for the older generation.

Rick Laws
Yet another entertainment venue bites the dust in Lincoln, the city as nothing apart from pubs, we have no big entertaiment venue, like the Doncaster Dome or the Grimsby auditourium, our council is living in the past, wake up & smell the coffee, coz Lincoln is sliding down hill fast, i am born & bred in Lincoln & it as nothing to offer entertainment wise where the big names of music & tv can perform, we have to travel miles to see a big show, why can't we have a entertainment complex here ?

Holly Sismore
I have so many good memories of visiting the theatre, and I was lucky enough to act on its stage in a production of The Sound of Music with the Red Chair Theatre Company. It was such a good experience, and one that should be available to other children involved in local theatre groups and the Theatre Royal group. I really hope the situation can be turned around!

Jacqueline Fox
It would be impossible to recreate the atmosphere found in the Theatre Royal, and would be a very sad day if it closes down.

Lincoln is advertised as a heritage city yet funding is to be cut on part of it's heritage - unbelievable. This theatre is an essential part of the fabric of lincoln and should not be forced to close. It is a gem and greatly loved by the public, staff and audiences.

Debbie Armiger
lincoln City council have got their priorities wrong again.Listen to the people of Lincoln and keep this little gem alive

The Louth Heritage Group
Lincoln's Theatre Royal is a marvellous amenity for people from the wider community, and, short-sightedly, Lincoln City Council takes no account of the people it brings in to Lincoln, spending money in restaurants and bars and getting to see what Lincoln has to offer.

Barry Morris
Yet another piece of our heritage is threatened with closure. The council have been driving the wedge in ever since they systematically closed down the local car parks. Who want to run the gauntlet of the night clubs when going back to your car after the show? No wonder attendance figures have been dropping off. It will be a crying shame if it closes. But hey, what a venue for yet another night club in the under 25s no go area?????

Alan Andrews
It is disgusting that the council should even consider withdrawing support for this Victorian gem. If it was for the students money would be there. Change your minds now, find the money by cutting waste at City Hall. We will support Sue Hodge, publicise her campaign.

Les Woods of Lincoln(shire)
Crazy, is one word for the suggested closure. Instead of giving me approximately, £10 annual discount on my council tax, Lincoln City Council could use it to help keep the Theatre Royal. It should be their top priority to save it.

Dave Cooper
The council haven't forced the closure, they've stopped funding a commercial business that's been badly run for years.

Andrew Morris
I am appalled to hear of the decision to pull funding on the theatre royal. I would be every interested to know which worthless and ineffective projects in Lincolnshire had their funding protected and which projects will survive at the cost of the Theatre. Shame on the council and their foolish decision to let the Theatre die.

Michael Kirk
I think it is disgusting that council will force the closure of the Royal.I know maybe they could turn it in too another theme pub (like the city needs another) shame on you spratt and the council....SHAME ON YOU

John Pritchard
It is a shame that this popular theater has now become threatened with closure. Lincoln needs a venue such as this to give the public real live entertainment, and keep actors in work!
