Skegness Magnificent 7

The cost of rubbish!

How annoyed do you get when you see someone dropping their rubbish in the street? Or maybe you see it being thrown from a car window? And, have you considered the cost of picking it up?

Councils are having to spend millions of pounds each year keeping the streets of Lincolnshire clean and tidy.

In the City of Lincoln £1,300,000 is spent on routine sweeping and litter picking, with an additional £56,000 being allocated to dealing with fly tipping.

East Lindsey spend £1,500,000 on cleaning the streets, beaches, public toilets and tackling fly tipping and in the last two years have issued over 100 fixed penalty notices for dog fouling.

A new campaign launched by East Lindsey District Council aims to raise awareness of the problem and encourage people to dispose of their litter properly. BBC Radio Lincolnshire's Scott Dalton has been finding out how Skegness is fighting for freedom from fag ends and chewing gum by employing the services of the Magnificent 7.

The Magnificent Seven!

Seven Ways You Can Help RESPECT Skegness

  • Remove your dog mess - Carry a bag – be responsible
  • End illegal dumping and waste transport - Swat the fly-tippers
  • Safe clean streets for everyone! - Working together to keep our town clean!
  • Put cigarette ends in the bin - Butt out - in the right place
  • End the Gum Ball Rally - Put chewing gum in the bin not on the path
  • Companies that care about our streets - Take away wrappers that get taken away
  • Take pride in our Town - Outlaw litterlouts

Do you always put your own litter in a bin or clean up after your dog? Would you tell a stranger to put their rubbish in a bin if you witnessed them dropping litter in the street? Or, do you think your local council should deal more harshly with offenders and prosecute more people? Did you realise the huge costs involved in keeping the streets free of litter and will it make a difference to your attitude in the future.

Well done Skegness . Was impressed to read your mission statement. Hope it works and jolts people into keeping their environment clean. Sadly last week we have had someone dump a load of corrugated asbestos roofing in a lane just outside Grantham. Maybe your idea might be taken up by other communities?? Have radio Lincs interviewed you??
