Plans put the river at the heart of Boston's future

Grand plans for multi-million pound riverside developments in Boston have been revealed. BBC Lincolnshire's Scott Dalton looks into them.

Norfolk has the Broads, Lincoln has the Brayford Pool and now could Boston be about to benefit from a string of waterway attractions?

Well that's the vision set out in the Boston Waterways Plan which aims to get the town to better exploit its riverside setting.

Consultants have identified a number of sites along the River Haven and other waterways in the town and suggests they are ripe for development.

Councillor Richard Dungworth, Boston borough council cabinet member for the waterways, said: "Boston is a great place to live and by developing our waterways and attracting investment we can make it an even better place for people to live, work and visit.

"This plan would help to show potential investors, developers and landowners what can be achieved in Boston. It's a very exciting project and one I fully support."

The plan comes on the back of a number of proposals already in the pipeline for Boston's riverside. Developers Modus are hoping to have the Merchants Quay shopping complex open on a site at the side of the Haven by 2012 while the Environment Agency want to construct a flood barrage on the river.

The Haven also forms part of the Fens Waterways Link project which aims to link Lincoln, Boston, Spalding and Peterborough with a navigable route to spark tourism.
