Young teenagers at a gig

Teeny Boppers

The live music venue, The Charlotte, in Leicester is holding gigs on Saturday afternoons for younger teenagers. They start at 14:30 and alcohol won't be served - just soft drinks and sweets. The first band to play an afternoon gig is The Screening.

A music venue in Leicester has started running afternoon gigs for young people.

The Charlotte on Oxford Street wants to give younger teenagers the chance to enjoy live music in a safe environment, at a time of day that their parents won't object to and at an affordable price.

BBC Leicester's Bridget Blair went to speak to the owner of The Charlotte, Andy Wright, to find out more...

On certain Saturday afternoons at 14:30 The Charlotte will be holding gigs especially aimed at young people.

Andy says that he came up with the idea because at the moment it's difficult for them to see live music at a time and place that's suitable:

"I think there are a lot of kids around at the moment, younger kids, who love their music - they're all on myspace discovering new bands - and I think a lot of the gigs, some of the bigger gigs, are quite expensive.

"If you're 13 or 14 years old it's difficult for you to come out at night and stay out late and the affordability of it all.

"I just figured if we got something together on a regular basis on a Saturday afternoon, kept it cheap or free even as the first one's going to be, then come along to The Charlotte and see some cracking live music!"

Alcohol is another factor that often dissuades parents from allowing their younger teenagers out to gigs, but Andy says only soft drinks and sweets will be on sale during the Saturday afternoon gigs.

The Screening

The Screening is the band performing at the first afternoon gig on Saturday 17 November.

BBC Leicester's Bridget Blair went to get to know the lads a bit better...

Tom Lewitt is the band's lead guitarist and he says he thinks the afternoon gigs are a great, original idea:

"We've been playing together for a few years since we were early teens, and we always struggled for places to go and watch bands when we were at that age, because you had to be an adult.

"But this is something new, we're starting something fresh and with easy access for everyone."

The first gig is on Saturday 17 November 2007 at The Charlotte at 14:30. If you're under 14-years-old you must be accompanied by an adult, but if not then just turn up!
