BlastYou are in: Leicester > Blast > Fashion Statement! ![]() Fashion Statement!By Sejal Sharma, Blast reporter With so much choice in the market, what influences Sejal in her choice of fashion? How conscious is she about what she wears from bags to dresses as a teenager in Leicester? When someone says the word 'fashion' the three things that pop into my head are catwalks, Paris, Milan and all those designer names.
What does fashion mean to people on a daily basis? I think that without realising it we are influenced so much by everything around us including the media, advertising, friends and culture. Trend SettersBy travelling to different places I have noticed that fashion changes from town to town, city to city and country to country. In India hand embroidered and sequins tops, bags and shoes are made. These ideas have been adapted by the UK and other countries. Even though there are designer labels, which guide trends, people make fashion an individual and personal thing. If you look at the clothes you are wearing and ask yourself 'why did I choose these items?', then I am sure you would come up with many different reasons. ![]() Fashion designersAlthough I believe that Leicester does not boast about the catwalks of London or Paris, but it has however produced talented fashion graduates through De Montfort University. The prestigious London event in June this year showcased 19 fashion colleges and DMU was on of them. Fashion designer Gok Wan was born in Leicester and moved to London to study at the Central School of Speech and Drama, but soon discovered that his real love was fashion. His success has risen and he has styled many celebrities such as Brian Ferry, Blondie and Erasure. Mixing fashionWalking through the heart of Leicester you can see a mix of cultures and races and this adds further to the fashion mix of Leicester. I recently spoke to a fashion student who explained that her best ideas have come from simply observing the fashion sense of people from different cultures in her community. ![]() My OpinionTo me fashion isn't just about the designer names or seeing all the latest trends in the high street stores. I see Leicester as trendy place as I always see people wearing the latest designs and outfits. What I like about fashion in Leicester is the fact that people make things individual and create their own style. This is what it truly makes Leicester a 'Designer City'. last updated: 11/09/07 [an error occurred while processing this directive] |
