Chris Egerton teaches Rupal how to swing her club

Chris Egerton gives Rupal a few tips

The Ruby Scramble

The Ruby Rainbow charity golf day took place on Tuesday 14 August. It was an all day event with 37 teams competing, among them a myriad of Leicestershire celebs. Read on to find out how they got on!

Despite the rain, many people attended Glen Gorse Golf Club's charity day, which was all in aid of the Ruby Rainbow Appeal.

The first group had a tee off time of 09:15 and the second group started at 14:15.

BBC Radio Leicester's Rupal Rajani got into the 'swing' of things. She was taught how to hit a golf ball, but it ended up in the flower beds!

"The concept of the day was about having fun. I think, having spoken to all that took part, that was achieved with flying colours."

Chatting With Celebs

Unfortunately the tips from passing golfers didn't help much, so instead Rupal did what she does best - chatting to celebrities and members of staff...

Along with the golfers there were some familiar Leicestershire faces such as former England and Leicestershire cricketer Phil DeFraitis and Leicester City's Muzzy Izzett.

Tigers star Steve Booth, Snooker legend Willie Thorne, BBC Leicester's Jon Barber, Chris Egerton and Bleddyn Jones also played, as well as Leicestershire pro Golfer Neil Chaudhuri.

A hog roast was provided for everyone at lunchtime by a local butcher – some of the celebrities played in the morning and afternoon so they needed a good feed!

One of the day's sponsors Blue Monday held a silent auction throughout the day – with items like signed Pele and Martin Johnson shirts, they were a big hit.

A sit down meal was provided in the evening, the golfers deserved it after all their efforts and getting extremely wet!

Thoughts Of Daggers

This was followed by an auction hosted by our own Charlie Dagnall, and Ruby Rainbow co-ordinator Dave Andrews came along to present the winning teams with their prizes.

Charlie gave us his thoughts about the event:

"The concept of the day was about having fun. I think, having spoken to all that took part, that was achieved with flying colours.

"All our thanks go to Glen Gorse Golf Club, to all the sponsors, especially Blue Monday who raised nearly £2000 with their silent auction and to the businesses that donated prizes.

"Unfortunately the worst thing about the day was that I played awfully and to add insult to injury, Willie Thorne won!

"From a personal point of view, my thanks go to all the celebrities that took part and gave their time so freely to the cause.

"Also to Lucy Blair, Barbara Wright and Glen Gorse, the day couldn't have happened without you. Thank you so much."

It was a really fun day despite the weather. We had people of all ages playing from the age of 15 to a gentleman in his 80's!

Keep listening to BBC Radio Leicester 104.9FM & DAB to find out exactly how much money was raised on the day!
