Staff put up the box for National Next Box week earlier in the year, but didn't expect a mother duck to set up nest there and hatch 15 ducklings! Back in February 2007 staff at Loughborough Library put up two nest boxes for National Nest Box week. Soon afterwards a mother duck made a nest in a bush in the courtyard outside the main library, and hatched 15 ducklings!
The library has been involved in a long-term project to create a green place to provide a home for wildlife, so the ducks were a welcome arrival. The brown and yellow ducklings have proved popular with customers and staff alike, and a spokesman for the library says that they're now making arrangements for their future: "We have taken advice from the RSPCA, and have put out drinking water, bread and corn for them. "The ducklings are trying to paddle in the water - and we will try to find them a safe home nearby, with water, and no obvious predators.
