Brilliant Belgrave!

Asian sensation

By Tiffany Dickinson
Asian culture has inspired fashion which has hit the mainstream this summer. Tiffany explores the Leicester influences behind the recent rise in fame for the Eastern eye.

It's big, it's bold and it's hard to ignore. Asian-inspired fashion has hit the mainstream this summer and no matter where you look, the shops are awash with fashions fit for a Maharani.

The Asian look for this summer focuses around one main piece - the kaftan. The usual suspects on the high street are offering variations ranging from the casual basic to show-stopping pieces in the most beautiful colours awash with sequins and detailed embroidery.

Kaftans suit every shape and size as they skim the body, not cling. They're also perfect for the beach this summer if you feel less than confident about parading about in a bikini.

Think Bianca Jagger or Kate Moss on holiday in Goa.

"Lucky for us Leicester residents, we happen to have some of the best Asian shopping this side of the Punjab on Belgrave Road."
Tiffany Dickinson

Of course, you could search a bit further afield than the high street for your perfect Asian look. As, lucky for us Leicester residents, we happen to have some of the best Asian shopping this side of the Punjab on Belgrave Road.

Belgrave Road also happens to be cheaper than the high street.

For example, I bought a beautiful sheer black kaftan for just £3, as opposed to my white kaftan from the high street for £18. Also found were two pairs of sequined shoes for £17, a pink Khurti for £5 and wrist fulls of bracelets at £1 a pop.

The accessories to be found are fantastic, so if you're not bold enough to go for the whole look, then instead check out the bracelets and earrings on offer.

Of course, there are also the designer shops on Belgrave, so it's not all cheap, the wedding clothing can be astronomical prices. However, for the sheer beauty of the garments, many are willing to pay the price.

And while you're on Belgrave Road, don't forget to check out the other shops. There are cash and carries that stock everything from Usted Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan CDs to religious icons to kitchen wear to henna.

There are also jewellery shops that stock the most fabulous 24 carat gold. There are also delectable restaurants that can quench your thirst and fill your belly after a hard day shopping.

The Asian sensation in fashion and culture is gathering pace, so why not take advantage of the culture that is lying at your doorstep?

With thanks to Shegufta Farooq and Maz Awan.

Have you spotted other shopping hotspots in Leicester?
