Wearside, with its tantalising strip of coastline, has been a magnet for invaders into Britain throughout history. From pre-historic settlers to industrial migrants, each group has left its mark on the area, and nowhere is their influence more obvious than in Wear's place-names. Studying the origins of Britain's place-names can give an insight into all the population movements through the centuries - and Wear has certainly seen its fair share of those!

"I have looked on the map and read some of the articles for Wear but where is County Durham in all of this. The article states that there is no proof of Roman infiltration into this area, isn't Chester le Street a Roman name?"
