A selection of unique portraits and paintings will be on display in The Crypt at Leeds Town Hall from Monday 12 March – Friday 16 March 2007. The artworks are mostly paint-based, but many use mixed media to achieve surprising and unusual effects. Some are bedecked with shimmering jewels; while others make use of layers of paint to lift the images out from the canvas, producing an almost-3D effect. The works in question are by the multi-skilled artists from Pyramid of Arts Older Adults Group, many of whom have moderate to severe learning disabilities. Lead artist Maggie McCool said of the project: "We decided to celebrate the numerous contributions to art that group members have made throughout Pyramid’s 17 years by creating a 'gallery of fame'. We chose the idea of creating self-portraits because it would remind us of all the friendships and art that we made together.” The exhibition is free and everyone is welcome. There will also be a series of workshops each day. These will be designed to enable adults with high support needs and learning disabilities. Workshop places (£5 per participant) must be booked in advance. The venue is wheelchair accessible.
