The Figuring Space exhibition at the Henry Moore Institute begins with the idea that both sculpture and furniture represent or reflect the human figure, and create a constant presence in spaces which might otherwise be empty. | | Mies: Barcelona chair |
Collages and drawings by architect and designer Mies van der Rohe show how he used furniture and sculpture to fill spaces. Next to these drawings in the gallery will be some of the actual sculpture he chose for his buildings, including works by Lehmbruck, Maillol and Kolbe. Mies' furniture will also be featured, including his iconic Barcelona Chair, designed as a seat for the visiting Spanish monarchs as they toured the Barcelona International Exhibition. In the exhibition the chair is placed with a royal seated sculpture - Henry Moore's King and Queen. Figuring Space will also include signature pieces furniture by Charles and Ray Eames and Arne Jacobsen which have become well-known modern classics. These chairs are designed as much to look at as to sit on, bringing art and interior design even closer together. Figuring Space is at the Henry Moore Institute, Leeds from Thursday 18 January to Sunday 1 April 2007. |
