Travelling around Greece

Travelling around Athens has recently been made easier by the extension and improvements made to Αττικό Μετρό (atti-ko me-tro), the metro system, which supplements το λεωφορείο, (to leh-oh-for-eh-oh), the bus, το τρολευ (to trolleh), trolley-buses and trams.

Improvements have also been made to the railway network in Greece, and you can travel relatively cheaply το τρένο (toh trenoh), by train, as far as the southern Peloponnese, as well as to its northern borders and beyond. Cyprus has no railways at all, but like Greece has a good service το πούλμαν (toh pool-man), by coach, which can be a good way to see some spectacular countryside as you travel around.

It’s common for people to wish you a pleasant journey when you travel. You may hear καλό δρόμο (kalo dhro-mo), literally ‘good road’ if you are going on a shorter trip, or καλό ταξίδι (kalo taks-ee-dhee), ‘good journey’ for a longer one.
