Gemma B started off where she had finished against the other Wigan team the previous week immediately causing problems for the Wigan Latics defence down the left. She opened up the scoring after only five minutes of the game skipping past one challenge and slotting the ball inside the near post. Mariah - making her debut for PNE - was early into the action and reacted quickly to a dangerous looking Wigan break to make a well-timed saving tackle. Preston took a further 12 minutes to score their second following Hollie’s first touch of the ball. She quickly threw the ball out to Olivia who played the ball down the left wing to Gemma. Gemma took the ball past two defenders and from the edge of the box struck a strong shot toward the goal. The Wigan keeper made a good save but could only parry the ball into the path of Lucy who blasted the ball into the roof of the net from 5 yards out. Preston continued to dominate the game and with 25 minutes on the clock the Wigan players scrambled the ball out of defence, but only as far as Mariah. Her long pass back found Lucy in space. Lucy ran onto the ball with only the keeper to beat clinically slotted the ball inside the left post for Preston’s third. Just before half-time Gemma scored Preston’s fourth when she cut in from the left and slotted the ball past the keeper. Early in the second half Emily’s pass down the right found Sam and she struck the ball goal ward. The Wigan goalkeeper couldn’t hold onto the shot and the ball ended up in the net for Preston’s fifth. Gemma completed her hat-trick and added a sixth with a left foot shot from the edge of the box after clever passing interchanges with Sam created space for the shot from a short corner. The Wigan players were quickly on the break after the restart and when a Wigan player was tripped in the box they had a great chance for a consolation. The ball was struck low to Hollie’s left but she guessed correctly and gathered the ball. Lucy cored her hatrick and Preston’s seventh when the PNE midfield won the ball from a Wigan goal kick. The ball was played through to Lucy who drove the ball into left corner of the goal. After a shot from Olivia that grazed the bar and another crucial tackle from Mariah, Gemma then added her fourth and the team’s eighth when she struck a left foot shot from the corner of the box inside the right hand post.
