A pub chain boss does. According to the Chief Executive of Randall's Brewery there are too many pubs in the island. David le Quesne says the move to drinking at home is having a serious effect on pub sales. He believes the island is "over pubbed" and that there has been a definite move to buying beer from shops. This has led to a drop in pub sales. David estimates about 40% of beer is drunk at home where, he says, drinkers can also smoke. The latest plans released for the Esplanade Quarter include around ten new pubs/restaurants. However David doesn't believe the island can even support that many new establishments. He told BBC Jersey that: "I don't see a rush for anybody here to build new pubs and there seems to be an air of common sense on the new development on the Esplanade which was going to be 52 square feet of restaurants and bars." He said this worked out about 20 new facilities. The new plans cut this by half but he told us "I don't think you could even take another ten in Jersey."
