Compass Progress2work is a drug treatment provider which helps those who have a drug misuse problem get back in to education, training and work. The organisation was set up 5 years ago and helps support those who have a current or past problem with substance abuse from prescribed medication, as well as illegal drugs. At present the region is experiencing an increase in labour and construction jobs, due to the summer floods and the ongoing development to Hull City centre. Compass have launched a new initiative which targets people who wish to undertake this type of work, but who haven't got the health and safety qualifications required to work on site. As well as offering free health and safety courses, the organisation is also able to offer a discretionary award to help purchase safety equipment, such as safety boots, hats and high-visual tabards. Nigel Atkins from Compass Progress2work said, "After Christmas people look to a new beginning sometimes and I think that we're offering a route in to this area of work for people who maybe feel that they want a new start." "It can be really difficult for somebody to take that first step. If, possibly through no fault of their own, they're unemployed and have been unemployed for a while, it's very hard to move forward."
