Glass rail

The railhead at the Guardian factory

Back on the rails

Long neglected local freight rail lines are seeing a rebirth.

Well all get fed up from time to time because of the number of cars and lorries on our roads. Whether you're stuck behind a line of traffic in a tailback or have car and lorry fumes wafting over your garden it can be a cause of annoyance.

Now, a rail industry conference is being held in Hull looking at the future of rail services in East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire. One of the topics on the agenda will be what can be done to get more freight moved by rail, rather than by HGVs on our roads.

Chris Arundel went to Guardian Glass at Goole. Their massive new factory just off the M62 is ideally located for getting deliveries by road of course. But instead, they opted to have a rail terminal installed . The Guardian factory manager, Jesus Urien, told us why.

" The decision related to two things ", he told us. " Firstly rail was more cost effective and secondly its much better for the environment. We import our main raw material, which is sand, by rail and we are now thinking of other raw materials too that could come by train. "

Network Rail will spell out its investment plans for the local rail network at a conference in Hull on October the 31st. The conference organiser, David Walford, told us.

" In the long term there's no reason freight couldn't be moved on the Hull to Scarborough line. There's still more work to do improving the track but all of these rail sites like Melton, Saltend, Goole and Carnaby have vast areas of land with a railway close by and that could be a tremendous asset for this region. "

The rail conference will take place on October the 31st at Hull's Royal Station Hotel.
