Hull College's fair trade fashion show

Catwalk queens

Fashion students at Hull College School of Art and Design modelled their latest designs all made using fair trade fabric.

The college fashion show, which took place on Friday 27th April, formed part of the Wilberforce 2007 commemorations to celebrate the work of Hull’s most famous son.

The garments, which were all made using materials sourced from ethically sound origins, were modelled by their designers on the catwalk at the fashion show.

Fair trade cloth had been sourced by the College's staff and fashion students.

“It’s been very difficult getting hold of the fabrics.” said programme leader Lyn Benson.

“We've had to search the internet. We've had to ring companies to make sure its fair trade.

“Some of the fabrics haven't been appropriate for what we wanted to use them for, because the quality was quite poor. Some have been excellent and therefore the students want to use them again.

“There’s a very limited market at the moment.” added Mrs Benson.

It was the first time the College had used fair trade fabrics and some of the students had experienced difficulty working with the materials.

“I've designed a beige and cream halter neck dress made from cotton.” said Charlotte Raynor, who is studying Fashion and Theatre Costume Interpretation.

“The cotton was really thick and hard to work with so we've had quite a few problems over the last few weeks.”

Graphics students at the College had designed posters, tickets and artwork for the show which were on display at the event.
