Election 07: Overview

Tim Iredale, the BBC's Political Editor for Yorkshire and Lincolnshire takes a look at the election issues.

The closest election battle in our part of the world takes place in North Lincolnshire where the Conservatives have a slender one seat majority on the council.

The Tories are hoping for a good result here as a pointer to the general election, when the local parliamentary seat, Brigg and Goole, is on David Cameron's must-win list if he's to become a future Prime Minister.

Labour activists in Scunthorpe believe they can buck the national trend and win back the council, giving them a much needed boost on the night.

Hull always sees a tough fight between Labour and the Liberal Democrats who currently control the council on a minority basis. The Lib Dems are hoping to win outright control of the Guildhall, but Labour will not give up the fight easily in a city which historically has been painted red.

The East Riding of Yorkshire is England's largest unitary authority and an area often thought of as "true blue" Tory territory. But the Conservatives do not have an overall majority on the council and the Liberal Democrats and Labour will be doing everything in their power to make sure it stays that way.

One thing I can confidently predict is that no party will win control of North East Lincolnshire. That's because it is virtually impossible mathematically, as only a third of seats are up for grabs.

The Liberal Democrats are the largest party with the Conservatives not far behind and Labour in third place. The Tories will be keeping a close eye on results in Cleethorpes, a key target seat at the next general election.

Have you voted? The majority of people in our region will not. Hull has one of the lowest turnouts in the country with just one in four people using their votes. Tim Iredale has been finding out why.
