Supermarket shoppers

Recycle as you buy

What we put in our trolleys at the supermarket can have a huge impact on how much of the waste we produce can be recycled.

Recycling Facts

  • Recycling just 1 plastic bottle can save the same amount of energy needed to power a 60-watt light bulb for 6 hours
  • For every tonne of paper we recycle, we save the equivalent of 17 trees from being cut down.
  • A recycled aluminium can saves enough energy to run a television for three hours.
  • Up to a quarter of the rubbish we throw away is packaging
  • Potentially 90% of dustbin rubbish could be recycled.

Up to a quarter of the rubbish we throw away is packaging made from cardboard, metal or plastic.

The simplest way to avoid this is not to buy products with excess packaging.

"Consumers do have the power to actually change manufacturers in the way they make the products" said Ian Graham, Recycling Officer for North East Lincolnshire Council.

However, shelf life and cost are the main considerations for people when shopping for groceries.

There's potential for up to ninety percent of the contents of our dustbins to be recycled but this depends both on the products we buy and also the facilities locally to recycle the waste.

Kerbside collections for recycling are carried out throughout Northern Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire but they vary considerably in what is collected from paper to glass, plastics and green organic waste.

"reducing waste is the priority, (but) it's better to reuse than recycle, it's more energy efficient"

Ian Graham suggests reusing plastic tubs for storage and milk containers can be washed and used as water containers in the garden.

Listen as BBC Radio Humberside reporter Clare Muckart, joins mother of two Janet Coates and North East Lincolnshire's Recycling Officer, Ian Graham on a trip to the supermarket. Ian gives advice on buying packaging with a view to recycling.
