Skateboarding youngster
A new skate park is opening in Beverley

All aboard for new skate park

Beverley's new skate park is due to be formally opened on 12th November during a gala day to celebrate millions of pounds worth of improvements on the Beverley Leisure Centre site.

The state-of-the-art skate park, which can be used for skateboarding, in-line skating and BMX riding, was built with the help of grant money from Active England. The cash has also funded a community development co-ordinator to drive up participation on the site and work with the skatepark group to develop and encourage more people to take part in skating or BMXing at the new facility.

"We really can't wait for the skatepark to open and to have a fantastic facility on everyone's doorstep for all members of the community to enjoy"
Cate Gillingwater: Community development co-ordinator

A key aim for the skate park group is to develop a voluntary 'buddy' system to act as the eyes and ears of the site and it welcoming and sage. The buddies will be in constant contact with Beverley Town Council, Humberside Police and the community development co-ordinator to ensure the safety of the skate park for all users. The police and town council are playing a key role in the skate park by giving informal awareness training to skaters and by providing continuous training and advice to the buddies. They also make regular visits to the skate park to build important community relations with the users and public.

A swipe card system will be used to gain access to the skate park, which is floodlit, and each user will have to register his or her details at Beverley Leisure Centre. This ensures attendance can be closely monitored and improves safety on the site. It is also essential that all skaters and BMX riders wear helmets and protective padding for their own safety.

Community development co-ordinator Cate Gillingwater said: "We really can't wait for the skatepark to open and to have a fantastic facility on everyone's doorstep for all members of the community to enjoy". She added: "We hope lots of people will come to the opening and help make November 12 a fantastic day." A flyer, currently being put together, will detail events on the opening day, including the opening of the new swimming pool and changing pavilion. Anyone who would like more information about the skate park, can call Cate Gillingwater (01482) 392534.
